Managing Screen Time In The New Year : Without Cutting Everything Out!

Let’s be honest — screens are a big part of our lives. Between school assignments, texting friends, watching videos, and scrolling social media, it can feel impossible to “unplug.” But managing screen time doesn’t mean you have to give up your phone or delete every app. It’s about balance — not banning. This New Year, you may be wanting to limit screen time, so here are a few practical tips to help you achieve this resolution.

Start by getting curious, not critical. Notice how certain apps or activities make you feel. Do you leave them feeling drained, anxious, or more connected and inspired? That awareness can help you decide what’s worth your time.

Try setting small, realistic limits. For example, you might decide to stop using your phone 30 minutes before bed or set time limits for apps that tend to pull you in. Some people find “no phone zones” (like at the dinner table or during homework) helpful too.

Most importantly, make space for other things you enjoy — hanging out with friends, moving your body, reading, or doing something creative. The more fulfilling your offline life is, the easier it becomes to put the phone down.

Remember: screens aren’t “bad.” They connect us, entertain us, and even help us learn. But when we’re intentional, we stay in control — instead of letting the screen control us.
